FAQ

The Answers You Need

Q1. What is this study about?

This study is aimed to explain mechanism of variety of basic, complex and social emotions in Indian context. The study is one of its kind in India in a way that no neurophysiological data is available for native population of India on web. And, also would be different from any other EEG data available on web around the glob in a way that the number of emotions the study is aimed to cover is around 25.

Q2. How this whole experiment is designed and implemented?

The experiment to collect EEG data is divided in three phases.

1. Stimulus Selection.

2. Stimulus Validation

3. EEG Recording

Stimulus collection was done using YouTube API and with 370 emotion words which gave us around 15000 videos. After applying textual and multimedia content analysis and some manual filtering, we selected 230 stimulus  for the phase-2 which is Validation study. For validation study we recruited 625 participants from IIIT-Allahabad including UG, PG(Masters and PhD) students. During validation simultaneously 40-55 participants participated in a controlled lab environment. After analyzing these results, we finally selected 40 stimulus to be shown during EEG experiment which will be starting from December 2.

Q3. After collecting EEG data what kind of analysis could be done?

With the EEG data we will be analyzing functional networks to explain role of cerebral cortex in processing of emotions. Since emotion is a socio-cultural phenomena, it will also shed some light on cultural affect on cortical processing. This investigation of culture specific mechanism of emotions on normal people can work as a bench mark for future studies of emotional and some social mental disorders.

The data has psychophysiological ratings which can be used to represent and find pattern in dimensional model of emotions. Also, pattern analysis, emotion recognition, emotional agent modelling and many more opportunities will be facilitated by the EEG data.

Can participant know the difference between there emotion processing (in terms of functional connections) and what is came out as template or in general processing?

Yes, but for that they have to accept some terms and conditions. These terms and conditions will be decided in consult with professional researchers in the field of neurology.
